Who/What inspires you?
Sara Blakely, the creator and CEO of Spanx (seriously, what did we do before them!) is my number one inspo. She is everything I want to be as a business woman, wife/mom (one day haha!)
She was featured by Oprah on her "Favorite Things" over a decade ago. At the time, she was a door to door fax machine salesman with an idea that every man behind a desk laughed her out of their office with. She burned the midnight oil, got that very idea developed, and got more business than she knew what to do with via Oprah. She didn't have a famous family, a trust fund, or really any idea what she was doing. But she built an empire off of her work ethic and figuring out one problem at a time. I love that she helps women from Oprah to my grandma look and feel their best every single day.
I recommend listening to every podcast she's ever been a guest on. It will light you up and lift up your chin on any bad day!
What aretwo truths and a lie about you?
- I broke my nose by falling off a chair.
- I live for steak and BBQ ribs.
- I am a total Grinch before my morning coffee.
What's a go-to song on your workout playlist?
I love finding something Non-Top 40 that gets me fired up and to kick [start] my work-out. Right now, it's "3 Nights" by Dominic Fike.
Which healthy activity is your current fav?
I absolutely LOVE to read. It's amazing how my vocabulary and memory are affected if I'm not reading something (even a fictional novel which is what I gravitate towards). I love reading along with Reese Witherspoon's book club. My favorite book is "One Day in December" by Josie Silver and my favorite non-fiction book is a tie between "Love Warrior" by Glennon Doyle and "You are a Badass" by Jen Sincero.
I'm also obsessed with painting my own nails. It's kind of like my weekly self-care therapy session. I'm pretty ambidextrous so I do a really elaborate, holiday themed nail art situation once a month.
What is your greatest achievement and how has it affected who you are today?
I am most proud of moving to LA without knowing a single soul in the state of California! I grew up with a well connected, very loving family. As an only child and a bit of a black sheep, I wanted to see who I was and what I was made out of without anyone's help.
I'm so proud of the fact that I now have to incredible homes and families - the one I was born into in El Paso, TX and the one I created for myself in Hermosa Beach.
As a woman, what advice would you give to your younger self to promote and encourage self-love?
I have always struggled with being very hard on myself. Seriously, I'm the biggest mean girl I know. It's only toward me - I have all of the grace in the world for my friends, but for as long as I can remember, I have expected an unattainable level of perfection from myself.
Whenever I slip back into an ugly cycle of internally tearing myself down, I pretend there is a 5 year old little girl following me around. Her name is also Danielle and she is so joyful, positive, bright and colorful. I ask myself, "Would you talk to that sweet girl who is trying her best like that?" I always say, "NO!" It makes me immediately cut out the negativity and want to give myself a hug.
I wish I had started this in middle school. We really are all just doing the best we can.
